Leonard “Lenny” Stokes

Lenny started playing softball in 1956 as a left fielder. His career was interrupted by serving in Army in 1961- 63. Upon returning he won numerous titles with a variety of teams at parks across the City especially on the North side, including Chopin, Amundsen, and Garfield Park champs from 1958-61. He was a good line drive hitter and played in pub leagues with the Lockwood Tap, Dukes, and Fullers Pub as a first baseman due to his outstanding hands. He won quite a few leagues on the North side including Portage Park. His most memorable team over eight years was the Monarchs in left and first base. He played into his golden years and retired in 2006 after winning six consecutive titles at Hanover Park while truly enjoying playing with his son Ricky. Now he is inspiring his grandson Matthew and Ricky to enjoy our great sport.
