LEE “MERTZ” FRY

Lee grew up on Chicago’s South Side neighborhood of Auburn Gresham. He excelled as a sprinter on the track team at Brother Rice High School and earned a full athletic scholarship at Loyola, with numerous Division 1 titles during his career.
After college, softball became his passion and his athletic talent helped him excel at Center Field with 16-inch softball teams. He played for the Pavers, Peppers, Renegades and Jays at many fields, tournaments and annual Major ASA tournaments. His greatest success came with the Renegades as he was voted Team MVP in 1981, and contributed to a .774 team winning percent from 1979-1985. He was All Tournament in 1981-84 and The Renegades were the 1983 Marshalltown Tournament Champions.
After retiring from Major play in 1985, he continued to enjoy playing, usually at 1st Base. He hung up his spikes at 67, after playing in the 50+ leagues. Lee has been married to his wife Janet for 51 years, has 3 grown sons and 5 grandchildren.
