Kathy O’Shea

In 1987, Kathy who loved playing softball started a fun and networking women’s league St. Christina Fields. Soon enough there were 12 teams and 200 women playing every Tuesday night. Kathy organized it until 2004 and then passed the torch to Jolie Becker, who is still running the St. Christina Women’s Sodality Softball League today. In 1994, Kathy wanted to express her gratitude for her experiences working for 19th Ward Alderman, Ginger Rugai who was a breast cancer survivor. Kathy wanted to use her love of the game to do something meaningful. With three of her good friends and softball players, Eileen Corley, Donna Redmond and Judy Stankus, they decided to start the Y-Me Softball Tournament and donate all of its proceeds to research to find a cure. They started with 8 teams and the Tournament in 2023 had 73 teams with over 1200 women. Kathy ended her tournament responsibilities in 2014. Countless generations of women, friendships, funds garnered, and a lot of fun are the direct results of what Kathy and her friends started all those years ago.
