DAGO PARK

More than just a team, Dago Park embodies the spirit of “Chicago’s Game.” Originating in the mid-1970s on the far southeast side of the city at what was initially known as Pietrowski Playground (later officially renamed Pietrowski Park to allow participation in city-wide Chicago Park District competitions), Dago Park softball rose from a group of young, softball-loving friends who simply hung out at their neighborhood park. The unofficial, but widely recognized, nickname “Dago Park” became synonymous with their fierce competitiveness and enduring friendship. Early on, the park supervisor recognized their talent and entered the youthful squad into Chicago Park District Tournaments, where they quickly proved their grit. This early success caught the attention of Hank “Burmy” Burmistrz, who became their first dedicated coach from 1975 to 1978. Demonstrating remarkable dedication, Burmy secured sponsorships from local taverns, Lakeside Inn and T’s Tap, even though the team was years away from being old enough to patronize them legally. Dago Park honed their skills in the local neighborhood leagues, battling rivals from Calumet Park, Wolfe Park, Trumbull Park, and Mann Park leagues.
