The Chicago Transit Authority founded a softball league in Grant Park in 1969. At its inception, the league consisted of 12 teams. One of these teams was the 69th St. Raiders, which later became known as the 74th St. Raiders. This change in name was a result of a shift in work locations, but it did not alter the team’s storied legacy. The team holds the record for the longest tenure within the league and has become synonymous with success. Throughout the years, Raiders have won 11 championships and finished in second place 16 times. They are the only team in league history to achieve a three-peat, securing consecutive championships from 1975 to 1977. Currently, only two players remain from the original team: Leon Harris and William “Sugar Bear” Robinson. The Raiders boast a combined history of over 50 years in the league, an unmatched record that underscores their significance. The team’s success has been guided by their lifelong coach, Bennie Rogers, whose dedication has been instrumental in maintaining the Raiders’ esteemed reputation.
